The Pina Bausch Foundation has pursued its objectives together with strong partners since it was established: The Tanztheater Wuppertal Pina Bausch on the one hand, public and private funders, without whom the foundation would not be able to fulfil its tasks on the other hand.
Arno Wüstenhöfer, general manager of Wuppertaler Bühnen assigned the direction of the ballet division to Pina Bausch for the 1973/74 season. Her predecessor Ivan Sertic cultivated classical ballet aesthetics and was popular with the audiences. Pina Bausch’s early work was received with according controversy. Still, she remained loyal to her vision and soon developed a unique artistic language. As a sign for this new start, the ballet was renamed “Tanztheater Wuppertal” in the very first season.
Tanztheater produced 46 pieces before 2009 and acquired fame and prestige in Wuppertal and around the world. After Pina Bausch died, the compagnie’s global success still continues.
The work on the Pina Bausch Archive just as many other activities of the foundation would not be possible without the close collaboration with Tanztheater Wuppertal.

The Pina Bausch School is a municipal comprehensive school in Wuppertal-Vohwinkel with nearly 1000 students and some 80 teachers. It was founded “Vohwinkel Comprehensive School”, and renamed “Pina Bausch Gesamtschule” in February 2014 with a big ceremonial act attended by NRW Schools Minister Sylvia Löhrmann. The renaming is understood as an expression of an inspiring confrontation with the person and the work of the Wuppertal artist Pina Bausch. In summer 2014, for the first time, the graduates obtained their leaving certificates with the label “Pina-Bausch-Gesamtschule”. The Pina Bausch School and the Pina Bausch Foundation had entered into a close collaboration in 2011 already: various project activities in the challenging environment of dance, art, and archival work, memories and daily life. The joint project “Work in Progress. The Pina Bausch Archives arise in Wuppertal!” is a 2013 prize winner in the dance section for classes 10-13 of the “Kinder zum Olymp!” competition of the Cultural Foundation of the Federal States.
