The publication marks the start of the Pina Bausch Editions. The 400 page book features 35 newspaper and television interviews, a programmatic text by Pina Bausch for her first season in Wuppertal, as well as her two major speeches on the occasion of the Kyoto Prize award. The quotations are a selection of text versions of interviews from 1973 to 2007, some of which had not been published before. The spectrum of original publication media ranges from specialist journals to major daily newspapers to a small school paper from Wuppertal. Glossary, catalogue of works and chronicle provide further useful information.
The Content
She was not interested in how people move, but in what moves them, Pina Bausch once said in an interview. Over time, the choreographer and pioneer of modern dance theatre continually made herself available to answer the questions of journalists. Particular attention was given to her working methods, especially to her questions to the ensemble members that were meant to search for words, images, gestures and atmospheres to “find a language for life”.
Pina Bausch also recounts key experiences of her life: Her childhood in Solingen, her training at the Folkwang School in Essen and the Juilliard School in New York, the encounters with teachers and colleagues. But above all, she recounts her 36 years in Wuppertal – the rejection that she initially received before she gained worldwide recognition with international guest performances and coproductions.
This first volume is a collection of texts from a variety of sources, ranging from major daily newspapers to the small school paper. Television appearances are included just as well as previously unpublished material from film interviews. The wide range of references allows for a deep insight into the work of one of the most influential choreographers of the 20th century.
